Located on the
Riviera Maya 1.5 hours drive south of Cancun, the sleepy little village
of Tulum Mexico is quickly finding its way onto the map.
Not
so very long ago, Tulum and her fabulous beaches, was a secret paradise
shared mostly by word of mouth amongst the international backpacker crowd
making their way through southern Mexico on their way to or from Central
America. Today the backpackers are finding the rustic cabanas that
were scattered along the beach, are being upgraded or replaced by
eco friendly resorts full of savvy vacationers looking for a get-a-way
experience without giving up all of the conveniences. In addition
to the cabanas of the eco resorts, parts of the area is transforming into more and more upscale
residential areas with vacation villas where no creature comfort
is left behind.
Tulum usually refers to
the poblado (village) of Tulum located a couple of miles back from the
beach, the stretch of beach from the Tulum ruins south to the entrance
to the Sian Kaan Biosphere, plus the quiet bays of Soliman and Tankha.

Soliman Bay
Soliman Bay
on the Riviera Maya of
Mexico is a gated residential community on a gorgeously private and quiet bay
just a short 10 - 15 minute drive north of the Tulum poblado (town).

When I
moved here in 2000 there was no electricity on the bay, the
accommodations were very basic and I don't even want to remind
myself how inexpensive the lots were by today's value. Now
there is electricity and while there is still some very basic
accommodation to be found on the bay, in general things have moved
way up the scale.
The bay
is shallow, bordered by soft white sand, and protected by an outer
reef so the water is normally calm. This makes it an ideal
environment for kayaking and
snorkelling. There is no commercial activity allowed on the bay.
This restriction, the gated entrance and the owners resolve to
respect the environment, ensures a high level of privacy and
serenity. Just you, your family or friends, and a
scattering of other vacation villas ringing the shoreline to share
paradise with. If you can't de-pressurize here. You
don't need a vacation, you need a prescription.

Tankha
Tankha
Mexico refers to Tankha Bay and the residential community of Tankha Tres
located just to the north of the bay. Tankha Mexico is a short
10-15 minute drive north of the Tulum poblado (town)
Tankha Bay is another one of those postcard
perfect scenes right off the pages of a travel magazine. Along the
shore of the bay, dug into the sand, is a little community of vacation
homes, a couple of small restaurants, a dive shop and tranquility
calling.
Tankha Tres is a new residential community
springing up along the rocky shoreline separating Tankha and Soliman
Bays.
Like all of the area, there are still some
basic accommodations to be found but the areas growing popularity and
the resulting escalation of property values is bringing more and more
upscale accommodations to the bay and available for you.

Tulum Beach
The
Tulum Beach is truly a marvellous stretch of white, powdery, sand and
azul, clear, warm, water. It runs nearly uninterrupted from
the Tulum Ruins on the north all the way to down into the Sian Kaan
Biosphere in the south. With only a few breaks of dramatic rock
outcrops, this is a gorgeous piece of real estate that beckons you to
wander down the shoreline with the ocean lapping at your feet.
So far
efforts to keep the area restricted to low density eco type resorts and
simple cabanas, has been fairly successful. Only one large resort
has managed to move in, but pressure is certainly on for others to gain
the permits. With so much of the coast already swallowed up by
faceless All Inclusive resorts, it would be a real shame to loose this
area to the mega resorts that blanket so much of the worlds beaches and
isolate vacationers from the culture surrounding them.
There is
not a great deal of commercial activity along the beach area. A
number of the eco resorts have restaurants and bars, and there have been
a few low key beach clubs open but otherwise you need to head into the
near by Tulum Poblado to find shopping and groceries.

The Poblado (town)
The Tulum Poblado is the small commercial hub of the area. Here
you can find a number of good restaurants, bars, boutiques,
dive
shops, tour operators, most services, and a mid size grocery store that
should provide most everything one would require for a week of cooking
at one of the villas or cabanas.
Accommodations in the Tulum Poblado is
restricted to fairly basic and inexpensive hostels and small hotels that
cater mostly to the international backpacking traveler.
