Las Garzas "the herons"

Villa las Garzas is an impressive 6000 square foot, modern, Mexican design, oceanfront villa located on the Riviera Maya in beautiful Puerto Aventuras Mexico between Playa del Carmen and Akumal.  It is ideal for large groups willing to give up some of the amenities in exchange for good value.  (see Riviera Maya map)   (see Puerto Aventuras map)

    As soon as you pull in to the private off street parking, you will immediately be taken by the lovely entranceway to this spacious vacation villa.  Past a hand made Talavera fountain and small garden, the artfully styled stained glass herons (las Garzas) are waiting to greet you.  Once inside, a double staircase with a 27-foot atrium ceiling of glass block skylight will immediately capture your attention.  From the elevated stairway landing you can head in one of 6 directions. 

Venturing either right or left around the staircase will lead you past a small private sitting area then into the very large and open “great room” where you will be met with your first awe inspiring view of the blue Caribbean.  This 36 foot wide room is entirely glass fronted so the views are uninterrupted and spectacular.

The décor of local Mexican furniture and accessories is somewhat minimal, fairly basic and yet stylish.  This room is large and open and will be the social center for the group.  It is arranged with one side as a lounge area ideal for a small group to share conversation or enjoy a movie on the small TV with satellite and VCR.  A large wet bar with full size refrigerator keeps your drinks nearby and cold.  The other side of this room has a dining room table set up for 8, with an additional table that sits 6 beside it.  There is an arched pass through from the dining area into the large kitchen that is decorated with hand painted tiles.

Heading out the sliding glass doors, the oceanfront side of the villa features three levels.  The villa itself is elevated with a terrace extending out alongside the pool.  This makes an ideal place for relaxing and tanning. Seating and lounging furniture is limited.  Part of this area is tiled and covered, providing cooling relief from the strong Caribbean sun.  Below this is the flat coral shore leading to the ocean.  There is access here to the water for some excellent snorkeling when the seas are calm.  Or if it is the beach you are after, it is a 5 minute walk along the oceanfront to a well protected, sandy bay in front of the Sunscape Hotel.

Back inside and returning past the stairwell, you can head down a couple of stairs in either direction to one of two sunken bedrooms.  Both of these rooms have 2 double beds, bathrooms with showers just outside the bedroom doors and views of the peaceful entrance way garden.

Up the stairs to the right or left will take you to a balcony landing leading to one of the four bedrooms on this level.  There are two extremely large Master Suites with oceanfront views and private terraces.  Each of these rooms has 2 double beds, attached bathrooms with showers and sitting areas.  The two guest bedrooms have attached bathrooms with showers, face the courtyard side of the property and also enjoy small individual terraces.  One of these has a King bed and the other is a Queen.

Las Garzas is located on a flat rocky shoreline in the private Las Rocas area of the resort/residential community of Puerto Aventuras.  The flat rocky shoreline in front of the villa offers spectacular vistas, well appreciated privacy and lazy hours spent combing the shore for treasures.  On a calm day snorkeling in front of the villa is spectacular.  A short stroll down from here is the Sunscape Hotel beach with its' sandy beach and protected bay.  Or the even nicer, Omni Beach with access to all of the Omni Hotel facilities, is a 15 minute walk or 3 minute car ride.  Puerto Aventuras offers many options for guests with restaurants, bars, shopping, golf, diving, tennis, swim with dolphins, deep sea fishing, sailing charters, parasailing and other activities & services within walking distance of the villa. We had a wonderful time on our vacation.  The villa was just the right size for our group, which ranged in age from 4 to 63, with teenagers and 30 somethings in between.  It was a memorable vacation for our extended family, and you, Twyla and Doug were professional, helpful and gracious. As for our stay, it was extremely enjoyable!  We can't say enough about how much of a good time we had.  The main purpose of our trip was to spend some quality time with family who we don't get to see but every other year....and so this was great!  The house was wonderful...very comfortable and roomy.  Cleo & Jose Luis were great, as was Angela the cook.  Let the owner know that the cook was great and very easy to work with.  Also, Doug & Twyla were super....wish we could of gotten more Scuba Diving in, but this was purely due to health problems within our family.  Only other regret I have was not being able to personally thank Doug.  I tried to go by after I went to the Dive shop on Saturday, however there a whole family outside and I thought I'd come back later...I got busy with packing and shuffling people to the airport and never got by.  So Doug, thanks for all your help too.  You all really made it a wonderful experience.  And as I told Twyla at the shop, I reiterate it to both you Doug & Mona:  If you're ever in Atlanta, just remember that "Mi casa es Tu casa"...  Gary Crump, Jan. 2004
