Solimon Bay,
where
the villa is located, is sheltered by an outer reef that has
produced a postcard perfect bay with a white sand beach dune that
separates and filters the water between the ocean and native
mangrove jungle on the other side. It is a semi=fragile eco system
that supports an exotic mix of tropical flora and fauna.
It is a
paradise that could be easily spoiled without the consciousness
that owners such as these have shown in the way they have chose to
cohabitate with this natural wonder land. As
if sprouting from the sands like the native palms that surround it,
Maravilla looks and feels as if it not only belongs, but has always
been here. This 5000 square foot home, with 4 bedrooms and 4.5
baths, is an oasis amidst an oasis.
Maravilla
is a wonderful blend of contrasts. Careful consideration has
been given to include all of the modern amenities that a guest might
want, while being totally traditional in the use of natural
materials, available light, natural ventilation and earth tones
drawn from the environment.
Cut
stone, Talavera and Saltilo tiles mix seamlessly with the latest
brushed steel appliances. Local Mayan artifacts share the spotlight with modern Mexican art. The home
incorporates numerous furnishings from the interior of Mexico, which
include oversized
iron and glass chandeliers, sculptural art, handmade furniture and
functional objects d'art. Towering tree trunks wrapped in
vines have been culled from the heart of the Mayan jungle to provide
integral support to the building, while creating marvelous
effect. During the day the house is bathed in natural light,
while at night artificial lighting is used to dramatic effect.

Pull the rental car
into the driveway, approach the large hand chiseled wooden door framed in cut stone, ring the brass bell to announce your arrival, and prepare to
leave your old world behind for the next week. You have arrived at
Maravilla.
As soon as you enter
the property a marvelous sense of tranquility begins to displace your
anxiety and stress. Just inside the gate you will find the staff
quarters where your delightful maid Elda and her very helpful handyman
husband Elder live.
They are here to spoil you and they most
certainly will. In addition to keeping the villa clean, Elda is
available to prepare any number of marvelous meals and do your laundry,
should you request this additional service. Elder will be sure to
keep the grounds looking good and everything working properly.
Wandering up the path of hand cut stone through
a tropical garden, you notice the inviting bench posed to savoir the
hypnotic effect of the fountain that it faces. You make a mental
note to return, but right now you are being drawn up the steps toward the
entrance to the villa.
You open the doors with anticipation and immediately
are relieved and overtaken with the marvelous ambiance that this house emanates.

The impressive entrance foyer looms upward 25 feet through
the second floor and forward the complete breadth of the house to the outdoors beyond. Step inside and you will find a guest room off to
your right.
This cozy room has a King bed, an attached bathroom with
shower, and a lovely terrace where the occupants can sit and enjoy the
garden over a morning coffee or late afternoon cocktail.
Moving further in to the villa your next
option is a stairwell that heads upstairs to the other bedrooms, a study
and the rooftop lounge.
The study is open,
bright and highlighted by a floor to ceiling bookcase complete with books,
CD's, DVD's, and objects d'art. An antique writing desk wired
with free unlimited internet access (bring your own laptop) provides an
inspirational place to do some work if you must, or to simply sit and enjoy
a little quiet time, as you should.
Adjacent to the study,
the Master suite boasts King bed with unique headboard made from antique
doors. A sky lit bathroom with over-sized Talavera shower, twin
sinks, bidet, and large picture window overlooking an upstairs
garden. French doors, leading out to a small private balcony with
ocean view, complete this spacious suite.
The other two guest
rooms are beachfront with panoramic views of the bay and beach. Each
offers a Queen bed, hand crafted headboards, and Talavera bathrooms with
double sinks and over=size shower. These bedrooms open up to a large
ocean front terrace overlooking the pool, which runs the width of the
building. Chaise lounges provide a private place to indulge in a
siesta.
All bedrooms feature
safes, individually controlled A/C, ceiling fans, clock radio alarms, and
hand crafted furniture from the artisan community of San Miguel
de Allende, which is located in Mexico's interior. Curtains with blackout shades provide privacy for late
sleepers.

Carrying on
up to the roof level via an internal stairway will take you to the owners
favorite part of the house. The open air seating area is shaded
and offers a 180 degree view of Solimon Bay on one side and 180
degree view of the native mangrove jungle on the other.
Maravilla!
Relax on the
couches, lie in a hammock swaying to the Caribbean breeze, or gaze at
the many stars that are visible at night. Maravilla!

Back
down on the ground floor the foyer opens up to the ocean frontage.
The spacious floor plan flows between distinct, but adjoining living,
dining, and kitchen areas. All are framed in glass and bathed in
filtered sunlight. The living room arrangement comfortably seats the
entire group on tastefully appointed couches and antique wooden chairs
that are reminiscent of hacienda style living. Colorful art and 12 foot
ceilings throughout complete the feeling of tropical airiness and old
world esthetics. The hand made wooden trestle dining table seats
eight in style and accented with a wrought iron chandelier. An
equally stylish table with 4 chairs sits close by in the hacienda style
kitchen should it be needed.
The fully equipped
kitchen (no dishwasher) is a delight. Stained concrete countertops,
Talavera tile accents, niches, arches and an array of modern appliances
are sure to meet any chefs requirements. This large open kitchen
enjoys full views of the pool and gardens.

Just
beyond the living and dining room, through massive 16-foot sliding glass
doors, is a shady covered patio which is complete with seating, coffee table and
chaise lounges. A few steps beyond the patio lies a beautiful pool
surrounded by indigenous Yucatan hand cut stone. Next to the pool are two more
tree trunks (one of them rising out of the pool!) which support a traditional
palm stick roof and offers breezy relaxation through the filtered light.
As
you make your way towards the beach, a patio area with gas bar-b-que
awaits you and that fresh fish you caught earlier in the day.
Benches and chairs complete the arrangement, while a fire pit is ready to
provide your evenings' entertainment.
A
large grass roofed beach palapa looking down on the water has hammocks
and chaise lounges calling out for you to take advantage of the view and
refreshing Caribbean breeze. The white sand beach is picture
perfect.
This
section of coastline is one of the calmest and most beautiful swimming and
snorkel sites on the Mayan Riviera, safe enough for the kids, yet still
within easy reach of a living coral reef and abundant tropical sea life.
Each summer, endangered sea turtles are observed following their
prehistoric ritual, crawling ashore digging huge nests in the sand and
laying their eggs. This sight is only surpassed as, a few months later,
scores of baby turtles emerge from the sand and hastily scuttle to the
safety of the waiting waters. This experience is a once in a lifetime
event!
